This past summer, a new bridge was FINALLY built to span the Fraser River between Maple Ridge and Langley. It was kinda sad to see the Albion Ferry go – so many good memories on that from our years at TWU. I think Kent first put his arm around me on that ferry as we watched the sunset! But I digress…
While memories are good, so is progress. And the new bridge is very progressive and impressive! An engineering feat. So, on one of the hottest days of the summer (39 degrees C to be precise), at about 4 months pregnant, Kent and I biked across it! Quite an adventure.
We parked at the Colossus movie theatre and got our bikes ready.
And we were off! There is a great pedestrian/biker path on both sides of the bridge. Note the “white sails” in the back.
The “jail bars” keep people from falling or jumping off, but still allow you to see the gorgeous scenery below.
At one point it got so hot that I got a brutal nose bleed! We decided to cool off in the river…
The scenery was just so beautiful.
Back to the dykes – nice and flat for biking.
Beautiful Mt. Baker in the distance.
And after hours of biking, back UP the hill over the bridge. It just got hotter and steeper…
So when we saw those Golden Arches in the distance, you bet we stopped! $1 large pop?
We’ll take two each! (Gotta replenish those electrolytes somehow, right?) Probably not the smartest nutritional choice ever made, but definitely one of the most refreshing!
